easyJet blames Brexit and Gatwick drone for £270m loss

Low-cost carrier indicates conditions have worsened since an April trading update

Low-cost carrier easyJet has reported a pre-tax loss of £272m for the six months to March 31 as it blamed Brexit uncertainty and the Gatwick drone incident.
The figure is a fourfold worsening from the loss of £68m in the same period last year but in line with the airline’s warning six weeks ago.
However, the company said revenue per seat at constant currency in the second half was now expected to be slightly down, a change since the April warning, indicating trading conditions have worsened.
easyJet maintained its full-year guidance for pre-tax profit.
Chief executive Johan Lundgren said there had been “tougher trading conditions” but the airline was “well-equipped to succeed in this more difficult market” with summer offers to customers and having more planes on standby in case of a repeat of last summer’s operational disruption.
The carrier said that headline cost per seat had increased 3.9 per cent and total revenue per seat fell by 7.4 per cent at constant currency.
It added that the Gatwick drone shutdown across three days before Christmas had cost it £10m. Reported drone sightings brought the UK’s second busiest airport to a standstill, leading to the suspension of flights for 36 hours and affecting about 140,000 passengers.
easyJet also reported that its efforts to ensure majority EU ownership to avoid losing its flying rights in the event of a no-deal Brexit have somewhat unwound: it had 49.6 per cent of EU owners (excluding the UK) at the end of April, whereas at the end of March it had 49.9 per cent.
