    The AIR FRANCE KLM 2009 summer schedule
    Wednesday 11 March 2009

    The AIR FRANCE KLM Group’s summer 2009 schedule (29 March - 25 October) has been adjusted in line with the sharp decline in demand caused by the unprecedented global economic crisis which is affecting all corners of the world.

    Thanks to the complementarities of the Paris and Amsterdam hubs, AIR FRANCE KLM Group customers will continue to benefit from a global network spread over the five continents.

    In terms of available seat kilometres (ASK), AIR FRANCE KLM Group capacity for the summer 2009 season will be down by -3.4% compared with summer 2008; - 3.4 % on the long-haul network and -3.4% on the medium-haul network.

    FOCUS ON THE AIR FRANCE SCHEDULE

    Faced with reducing demand Air France is adjusting capacity on all networks, particularly noticeable on routes to North America and Asia, as well as on domestic routes.

    In total, capacity (expressed in ASK) will be reduced by 2.7% for the summer 2009 season, down 2.5% on the long-haul network and down 3.1% on the short/medium-haul network.

    This adjustment to capacity is the result of a route rationalization policy aimed at reducing the number of flights rather than close routes. The network remains as attractive as before.

    Air France will take delivery of four B777-300s during the summer season and will retire two B747-400s from service. On the medium-haul network, the oldest A320s will be replaced by A321s.

    The long-haul schedule

    The Joint Venture with Delta will enable us to optimize and rationalize capacity on the transatlantic network, with improved departure times for flights to Detroit, the resumption of a mid-morning flight to Atlanta by Air France, the launch of a Paris CDG - Pittsburgh route by Delta starting on 4 June and, at the end of the season, the resumption of flights to Philadelphia by Delta with an aircraft better adapted to the volume of traffic.

    Capacity will also be adjusted on the New York route, with the suspension of the flight operated by Delta and the reduction of one Air France flight per week. There will be 48 weekly frequencies on the Paris - New York route. Capacity will also be adjusted on services to Houston with 12 weekly flights instead of 14.

    On routes to India, the Paris-Chennai route, which is recording heavy losses, will be suspended.

    These changes enable us to increase capacity on destinations which are currently less affected by the declining traffic:

    • There will now be 4 daily flights to Montreal;

    • On flights to Beirut, Air France is starting a 2nd service, 4 times a week, bringing the number of weekly flights to this destination to 25 with 2 daily flights operated by MEA on a code-share basis;

    • There will be more flights to destinations in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, with a daily flight to Saint-Martin, a service to Havana 6 days out of 7 and 10 weekly flights from Paris Orly to Reunion Island;

    Above all, it is services to West Africa and especially its oil and gas industry destinations which will benefit from a high increase in capacity (a 10.1% increase in ASK on routes to Africa excluding South Africa).

    As long as traffic rights are obtained, there will be a second frequency operated by Air France on a code-share basis with TAAG to Luanda. There will be a daily Dedicate service by A319 to Port Harcourt. Another frequency will be added to the Brazzaville route (4/7) and the Niamey-Ouagadougou route (also 4/7), whereas capacity will increase on the Lagos and Bangui routes, operated by larger aircraft.

    The medium-haul schedule

    On the domestic network, affected by both the crisis and by the continued expansion of the rail industry’s market share, demand has been weakening since spring 2008. Together with a necessary reduction in costs to maintain competitiveness on this network, adapting capacity (-6.4%) means 8 less frequencies on departure from Paris, mainly from Orly and at the least popular times of the day. On departure from the French provinces, the adjustments made last winter will be maintained and the Rennes - Strasbourg route will be suspended.

    The reduction in capacity on the Europe/North Africa network will be limited to -1.1% in ASK compared with summer 2008.

    There will be 2 daily frequencies from Orly to Milan-Linate, in conjunction with Alitalia. These flights will be operated by Alitalia on a code-share basis. They are in addition to the 6 daily frequencies on departure from Paris-CDG to Linate and the 6 flights from Paris-CDG to Malpensa.

    There will also be 3 daily flights from Orly to Barcelona in addition to the 8 departures from Paris-CDG.

    The Orly-Valladolid route will be suspended whereas the CDG-Oviedo service launched this winter will be maintained.

    Flights to Southampton will now leave from Orly instead of CDG.

    Finally, a Basel-Mulhouse / Amsterdam route will be launched this summer with 2 daily flights.
